We’re pleased to announce that the school board named Dr. Sean Alford as the District’s new superintendent at the special called board meeting held on June 30th at the District office. Dr. Alford comes to Aiken County with two decades of administrative experience in South Carolina’s public schools. He is currently an Assistant Superintendent in Dorchester School District Two in Summerville, South Carolina.

SMS ATTENDANCE POLICIES

Regular school attendance is essential to student achievement and effective school organization and performance.  Students are expected to attend school regularly. Any absence shall require a note from a parent/guardian stating the reason for absence. The note should accompany the student on the date he/she returns back to school.

Conditions under which absences from school may be excused include:
  • Student's personal illness. (A statement from a physician may be required.)
  • Illness in the family requiring the temporary help from the student. (A statement from a physician may be required.)
  • Death in the family (up to three days).
  • Absence due to a school approved activity.
  • Observance of recognized religious holidays.
  • Genuine emergencies as approved by the principal.
Students absent for more than ten days during a school year may lose credit for the entire school year.  When a student returns to school after an adsence, a note of explanation from the parent, guardian, physician, or other health provider, must be submitted.  This note should be given to the attendance clerk.
